As part of Argillà 2024, on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Hiroki Kiyokawa the undisputed master of this traditional Japanese technique, holds a public demonstration at MIC in Faenza. Kintsugi is a technique that originated from the Tea Ceremony culture some 500 years ago. Through the use of gold or another natural material it breathes new life into broken vessels by emphasizing the damaged parts. The technique derives from the teachings of Eastern philosophy that everything that has a form is destined to break and that breakage, is not an unfavorable event, but creates the possibility of future reconstruction. Kiyokawa has been involved in kintsugi restoration for 50 years, handing down the traditional techniques established in the Edo period. He has restored temples and shrines, architecture, Buddhist statues, ceramics, lacquered objects, antique furniture and antiques. He has been teaching kintsugi classes in Kyoto and Tokyo since 2015 with the aim of spreading this restoration technique and passing on the tradition. Since 2017, he has been mentioned in many international media, such as the BBC, which has led to widespread publicity of his activities in Japan and abroad, and in 2022, he performed at the Vatican in Italy at the invitation of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In July 2019 He founded ‘Kiyokawa Lacquerware Arts’ and established the NPO ‘ROLE’, of which he is the representative director, in June 2021. Through his company and NPO activities, he is actively involved in the creation of successors and the preservation of traditional culture.
